Environmental initiatives

Philip Morris International is committed to respecting and protecting the environment.

As with everything we do, our commitment amounts to more than good intentions. For over a decade, in our offices and factories around the world, we’ve worked hard to:

Monitor and reduce the environmental impact of our operations
Promote the sustainability of natural resources
Encourage environmental responsibility among our employees

Landscape

We’ve developed an extensive environment, health and safety programme in all our factories. The programme requires each facility to track the environmental impact of its operations, including air emissions, waste generation and water consumption.

As a result, our factories often serve as models for other local industries. In Turkey, for example, our environmental management system has been recognized as the best in the area and our factory representatives lead meetings among different companies and government groups to share ideas and experiences with implementing such systems.

Elsewhere we use third-party auditors to help us monitor and improve our performance, and many of our facilities have achieved environmental management certification (ISO 14001) from the International Organization for Standardization.

We also run regular training programmes to increase environmental awareness among our employees. It’s such complementary approaches and sustained efforts that often yield the best results, as shown by our facilities in Brazil’s Santa Cruz do Sul: as of February 2005 they were recycling more than 97% of their total waste.
