Developing products that might reduce the health effects of smoking is one of our top priorities. We have been active in this field for a long time, and we have shared our findings with regulators and the public health community.
Our research and development efforts cover both internal programs and research projects that run entirely outside our company.
Our worldwide external research program has three broad aims: to add to the general scientific understanding of the health effects of our products; to discover product modifications and designs that might reduce those effects; and to develop sound methods of evaluating the effectiveness of such modifications. "As, Chief Operating Officer of the company, I can assure you that we're doing our best to develop cigarettes that might reduce the health effects of smoking."
André Calantzopoulos, Chief Operating Officer
Current research includes a study conducted by Philip Morris USA of the exposure of smokers in the USA to cigarette smoke. It seeks to relate variations in actual human smoke exposure to changes in cigarette design. We hope that the data will, among other things, provide a basis for the development of new reduced-risk products.
Other current research and development initiatives focus on preventing the formation or reducing the levels of toxic chemical compounds produced during the burning of tobacco in a cigarette.
