In 2007 we made charitable contributions totalling more than $18 million. Some of the projects we fund need large sums over many years. Many others are small in scale: it doesn’t always take a lot of money to make a difference.

On this page we introduce some of the projects that we’re particularly proud of. For more details please click the headings below.

Promoting literacy in Brazil
According to a census taken in the year 2000, some 16 million people in Brazil are unable to read or write. At around 13% of the population, this represents one of the highest illiteracy rates in South America. Since 1997 the Alfabetização Solidária (Solidarity in Literacy) institution has been working to tackle this problem.
The Java earthquake
In May 2006 the province of Jogjakarta on the island of Java was hit by an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale. Over 3,000 people were killed and thousands more were left injured or homeless. The disaster affected our company directly.
Supporting sustainable tobacco production
The economies of Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania are dominated by tobacco production. Together, these three African countries produce an annual crop of 241,000 tons of tobacco, accounting for 60% of their total agricultural exports. And every year our company buys a sizeable proportion of this.
Violence: que faire Tackling domestic violence
Launched in May 2006, "Violence: que faire" is a website run by the Swiss organization Vivre sans Violence. The website is the first to offer information and advice for victims of domestic violence in French-speaking Switzerland.
Children of Hope, Istanbul Children of Hope
It’s estimated that some 10,000 children live and work on the streets of Istanbul. This shocking figure is one of the driving forces behind Children of Hope, a non-profit organization founded in Turkey in 1996 and dedicated to protecting street children.
