Smoking and health

A clear and consistent message

Cigarette smoking is addictive. It can be very difficult to quit but, if you are a smoker, this shouldn't stop you from trying to do so.

Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema and other serious diseases in smokers. Smokers are far more likely than non-smokers to develop diseases such as lung cancer. There is no such thing as a "safe" cigarette.

"Smoking is dangerous and addictive."

Smokers should continue to know about the dangers of smoking. Throughout this section, you'll find information about the health effects of smoking, along with advice on quitting. You'll also find links to public health authorities and other organizations that provide more details on those topics. In addition we've provided information about the ingredients in our cigarettes and the chemical compounds in cigarette smoke.

We support a clear and consistent public health message about smoking, disease and addiction wherever we sell our products. We also support laws calling for cigarette manufacturers to place health warnings on cigarette packaging and advertisements. In countries where no such laws exist we voluntarily place warnings on our packs, cartons and adverts. We want the facts to continue to be widely known.
